REVIEW: Eilen Jewell – Heartache Boulevard EP

Eilen Jewell – Heartache Boulevard (Signature Sounds)
1. Heartache Boulevard
2. Fine & Mellow
3. The Flood
4. I’m Head Over Heels In Love
5. Nobody’s Business
Hot on the heels of last year’s critically acclaimed breakthrough album, ‘Letters From Sinners & Strangers’, Eilen Jewell makes a welcome, if brief, return with ‘Heartache Boulevard’. Besides the title track, a barroom lament in the grand old tradition, and ‘The Flood’ – a highlight from Eilen’s self titled debut, 3 previously unreleased tracks are included: ‘I’m Head Over Heels In Love’, and 2 songs made famous by Billie Holiday; ‘Fine And Mellow’ and ‘Nobody’s Business’.
One of the most universal points of praise for Jewell’s recordings to date is her ability to make contemporary sounding music with classic sensibilities. Far from the commercial, radio-friendly dross churned out on country radio these days, her songwriting is spare, natural and affecting – her delivery heart-tuggingly authentic. Weary but hopeful, Holiday is as much a spiritual ancestor to her as the oft-touted influence of Hank Williams, and it is testament to Eilen’s impeccable skills as a composer, performer and interpreter that her originals flow beautifully alongside the covers.
She is aided in her efforts by possibly one of the most underrated bands working in country today: a stellar 4 piece who perfectly compliment the themes and nuances of their vocalist. Of particular note are versatile guitarist Jerry Miller and skilled percussionist Jason Beck.
While newcomers would be advised to first check out her full-length albums (‘Sinners & Strangers’ in particular), for fans, ‘Heartache Boulevards’ exclusive tracks make it an essential purchase.
